Peter Gardner obtained a PhD in surface vibrational spectroscopy in 1988
from the University
of East Anglia. He then
spent four years at the Fritz Haber Institute (MPG) in Berlin using vibrational spectroscopy to
monitor oscillatory reaction phenomenon on surfaces. In 1992 he joined the
Chemistry Department at the University
of Cambridge studying
catalytic systems and then in 1994 moved to the Chemistry Department at UMIST.
In 2004, with the formation of the University
of Manchester he joined the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical
Science but his research is carried out at the newly opened Manchester
Interdisciplinary Biocentre. Since 2000 he has built a successful biomedical
spectroscopy group and in collaboration with Noel Clarke has focussed on using
vibrational spectroscopy in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. His group also
have a keen interest in understanding the fundamental causes of spectroscopic
discrimination and separating biochemical and physical spectral influences.
